Movement-voting nexus in hybrid regimes: voter mobilization in Hong Kong’s Anti-Extradition Bill Movement

The “movement-voting nexus” thesis highlights the impact of transformative social movements on shifting voting behaviour and electoral outcomes. However, existing studies have overwhelmingly focused context democracies. This study goes beyond literature by testing applicability nexus’ in hybrid regimes, using voter mobilization Hong Kong’s Anti-Extradition Bill Movement as a case study. findings this are two-fold: quantitative from territory-wide telephone survey validated regime, statistically establishing significance “movement support” novel predictor (vis-à-vis other predictors such political partisanship) times movement, democracies; qualitative extended interviews respondents revealed that was operating shadows authoritarian influence territory, reflecting nuanced features regime. contributes to extant advancing discussion democracies paving way for future research across diverse regimes.
